Sailors on the USS Constitution in Norfolk VA WANT OFF

UNKNOWN NEWSPAPER - AUGUST 8TH 1838

The USS Constitution rolls into Norfolk VA. One man dies during the mooring, and after docking the entire crew immediately asks to be paid and discharged. Not a great end to a cruise for Old Ironsides. Around this time the USS Constitution was as flagship of the Mediterranean Squadron under Commodore Jesse D. Elliott.

LITTLE KNOWN FACT - In 1849, while the ship is operating in the Mediterranean, she is visited by Pope Pius IX at Gaeta, Italy; he is the first Pontiff to "step" onto U.S. territory.
