This is a page from a 1810 class book for young students. This is what a student would believe the United States and neighboring countries looked like on a map. Alaska is "Russian Territories". The first permanent European settlement in Alaska was founded in 1784, and the Russian-American Company carried out an expanded colonization program during the early to mid-1800s. Mexico owned California and Arizona. As a result of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo (1848), Mexico lost one third of its surface area due to civil war with Texas, and later war with the United States. Canada was listed as British America. Around Oregon you can see the Lewis & Clark river.
