The Cripple Creek Colorado fire was started by a couple getting into a argument and banging against a gasoline stove at one of the many brothels in the area. Because the city was filled with wooden framed buildings, the fire started and spread quickly. The city firemen demolished buildings in the infernos path to stop the fire. Amazingly, another fire started four days later at the Portland Hotel. This was believed to have been deliberately set, and some were lynched for being suspected as arsonists. Cripple Creek would lose another eight blocks of buildings in the second blaze. Thus begun the construction of brick buildings in the area.
